Adobe Illustrator 10 bogging computer performance

Hello,

I have a 1.9 Micron PC Pent 4 with 512 ram with XP . As I build an image on an 8.5 11 sheet size the program gets bogged down. I know its not the computer because it is new and fast. I have the scratch disk sent to the c: drive which has 100 gigs of room. As the computer Boggs down sometimes the program will lock up. I have reinstalled the program. I also took several programs out of start up. I do not have this problem with PS 6


I have even flatten some of the art work.

Any help would be great.
