Adobe Generic Postscript Driver problems

Hi all

I'm using the Generic Postscript Driver from Adobe to create .ps files and then Distiller to convert to .pdf.

On Win2K, both Distiller and Ghostscript create a monochrome .pdf from the .ps, whereas on Win98 the conversion is correct.

Using the HP Color LaserJet PS printer on Win2K resolves the problem - anyone got any ideas? HTH

Chris,

Have you downloaded from Adobe the latest drivers and PPDs? Drivers that work well on 98 often cause funky problems on 2K and XP. Also, are you running PM6.5 or PM7.0.. if 6.5 then you will want to seriously consider laying out the $79 to upgrade to 7 for W2K... if you have vs7, Adobe has a free update to 7.01, also. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

To test this I am printing to the .ps file from various Windows apps, not PM6.5, which is what I have.

At the moment I am concerned that any Windows app should create a suitable .ps for conversion to .pdf by printing through the appropriate driver.

The results are entirely consistent and the Generic Postscript Driver was downloaded only a few days ago.

The output from PM6.5 is not relevant to this particular project.

I am considering a clean install of Win2K onto another machine and testing again - this particular version I am running is already quirky on other issues. HTH

A clean install of W2K would be a good start. Also, this topic might be more relevant in the Adobe Acrobat forum. I have only played with Ghostscript a little, and that has been on a 98 box and on my NT box... with no problems on either one, but then I have not done anything in-depth such as it seems you are doing.

Out of curiosity, what happens if you use the generic driver in PM and create print to file? How about if you use File>Export? When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Using the generic driver from PM6.5, the result is OK, .pdf in in colour.

Export to PDF causes an error and doesn't create a PDF - can't remember the location of the logfile right now so can't give any details. HTH

Do you have graphics placed in the document that are either copy/pasted in, or that are not EPS or TIF? I never rely on Export anyway because of the tendency to crash & burn. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

In my haste to test the Export, I had dumped a .jpg into a page whereas it should have been EPS or TIF.

Works correctly with the appropriate image file. HTH
