User's Vista 32-bit Home Basic laptop had an Internet connection problem which was fixed. IE7 homepage set to show BBC news on-line, which all ran ok.

Machine then had several MS updates including SP1 and IE8. After that, could not view on-line news, reported as Flash Player not installed. Well it clearly was installed, but uninstalled it anyway, rebooted and reinstalled again just to be sure. Still no go. It seems that the only way it will now work is if UAC is turned off.

Have tried the Adobe Registry fix, but makes no difference.

Cannot find a fix for this. Works fine in Firefox without having to disable UAC, but user wants IE7/8. Don't really want to revert back to IE7...

Have you tried creating another user and testing with that to eliminate the possibility of a corrupted profile?

Have you checked the Add-ons for IE to make sure it is listed in there and not disabled?

The mention of UAC makes me think that perhaps there is some access permissions problem.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.

How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

Thanks Linney. I'd already done a disk check (system and surface scan) earlier and found no problems. I'd also done checks for viruses and malware - none found.

Checked Add-ons, and all ok. Made a new user, and problem disappeared. Transferred all docs, files, pictures over, and user happy.

I am left to ponder that Microsoft's Vista updates have yet again appeared to cause more problems than they solved...

Just part of computer life, I guess, anyway this problem is behind you, so you can look forward to the next one. It is sure to pop up soon.
