Hi,

I am running Adobe 5.5 on Windows XP (or trying to anyway). I was able to get into Photoshop and do a bunch of graphics work, however, it wouldn't let me save anything (nor would it let me shut down). The error I get is "Could not load alert resource!" I don't know what that means or how to fix this problem. I have been running this Adobe on Windows 98 just fine - now with xp I have nothing but headaches!

Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?

Thanks

Sandi

Is there anyone here who can help me? Please???

You may want to take this to the user to user forums at adobe.com. There is more activity there.

5.5 may not be suited for XP.

After just having encountered and solved this problem, I'll spill what advice I can... and to be honest, it's going to sound a little simple.

Being a great fan of version 5.x and more than disappointed in versions 6 and up (yes, 7 included), I value having Photoshop 5.x around. I just updated XP Pro to SP1 and noticed a strange occurance on trying to do familiar actions that require common dialogs to pop up (like closing an unsaved file, saving over an existing file, etc). The dialogs didn't display, but your "Could not load alert resource!" message did - making it impossible to close the program without killing the process. Even after uninstalling and reinstalling PS, the error remained. Well, after much system wrangling and whatnot, I just got fed up and decided to look at what was fragmented after the SP1 install. Sure enough - some twiddly bit in System32 needed some defrag attention and voila, Photoshop resumed it's normal working order.

Your results may vary, but it worked so well here I trust it may for you as well.

Now... if we can only get Adobe to resume Color Dodge to its former glory and let us create completely custom-scripted UIs, all us 5.x boys may actually shell out the cash for the new versions. =]

Have a good one.

How did you do that? What did you look at that could tell you what was fragmented? I am honestly fascinated.

Heh. Nuttin magical, just ran a defrag and watched what files were being changed.

Sandi:

I also ran into this very problem with Photoshop 6.0. It was working fine on Windows 98 and I got this same message on Windows XP Professional. After following the advise MrVesham gave, I still encountered the problem when trying to delete a layer or save a file. I was able to solve it by going into the properties and changing the compatibility from "run this program in windows 98 mode" to nothing. In other words simply disable the compatibility feature and let it run under windows xp. Hope this helps.
