Adobe doesnt keep .gif background transparent..

I've tried a million ways to make the background SAVE transparent. I have a transparent background for my image, but every time I save it, the transparency doesn't stay transparent. For instance, if I save it as a gif, it will look transparent when saved, but when opened in any other program besides photoshop, the background will be white. When saved as a PNG or TIFF, the background wont even look transparent.. it's a combination of some of the colors used when making the picture. I'm using photoshop CS>

Are you using Save for Web?

I had a similar problem, do you have a background layer???

if so hiding it doesn't work, you need to delete it.
