Adobe Acrobat Pro CS2 Compression

Sorry for the double post, but I realized after I posted that the title would be meaningless.

What steps will result in the most efficient compression? I am trying to reduce the file size by deleting pages; but each time I do, the file size INCREASES. Why is that?
