I have a lab of Intel PII 500MHz machines w/ IDE hard drives running Solaris 7. On one machine, Admin Tool (launch at CDE or cmd line) caused a core dump whenever you try to add a new group. At first adding users through Admintool was OK. After several failures to add groups, now adding users will cause the same core dump. I restarted the machine one time but it didn't help.

How do I troubleshoot this problem? I was thinking of removing admintool and reinstalling it. But where do I start? I don't want to pkgrm a whole package to fix a problem like this.

Please help!!!

I don't kwon if this is the case, but Solaris 7 admintool "core dumps" with SEGV if /etc/group file has a misconfigured line i.e. a line with two entries delimited by a colon instead of a comma.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Carlos Almeida,

Thanks, Carlos. I will check. But if there is an error in /etc/group, won't it also affect groupadd? I had no problem using Unix commands to manage users and groups on that computer.

I will let you know. Thanks again!

Carlos,

I checked the /etc/group file and did find that, for some reason, two entries were on the same line. I put a line break in there. And Admintool worked!

Thanks so much for the great tip. BTW, how did you find out about the solution? I searched everywhere including Sun's site and Deja.com but couldn't find a match on Admintool and core dump.

Best Wishes,

daniel
