Hello

i recently bought a pc but do not have the admin rights. It is xp and i have managed to download a version of MS VB express 2008. Using VB is there a way to create a new user then add to admin group or am i barking up the wrong tree entirely here. I am a familiar low skilled user of VBA particualry in excel and have seen that many things are possible! any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Nie

To my knowledge, the program that would create the account, etc, would have to run as admin to work.

How did you manage to do that? If it is your computer, you should be in charge!

If you manage to write a VB application to create a user, it runs as the user that started it. So it effectively has the same rights you have.

Search the net about recovering windows passwords or reinstalling admin users. It could be that a "repair" action of windows (install, but choose to repair instead of clean install) would fix it. It is definitely something I would try.

I don't think any programming language will repair the OS, unless you switch to really serious hacking.

If it were simple to hack the Admin account with VB, that would finally convince to switch to UNIX.

My solution: reinstall the operating system.

There are a few ways to do this...

Try loging in as Administrtor with a blank password, or password, or administrtor

See if the supplier has a admin login as well. Dell used to do this on Win2k, not sure about newer.

If you can, break the profile, so it will open with the default profile (at your own risk!)

Download a ubuntu repair disk. Ubuntu is a unix OS that can run from CD. There are some special versions that will boot a PC, give you accesss to the file system, let you delete the passwords file, effectively resetting all the passwords to blank. Take out CD, boot to windows and log in as adminstrator.

You might be better posting in this forum

which is the Vb.net forum - rather then vb 5 and 6 (which is now 10 years old (vb6)).

Or even the XP forum. There are ways to easily reset the admin password. With a quick search of google - you should be able to find bootdisks to do it. I would warn though - make sure you know what you are doing and have files backed up.

If you are confused with VB types have a look here which seems to have a good run down.

Just a reminder: this site has a policy of NOT providing direct advice on breaching security measure. Yes, there are plenty of occassions where such a breach might be completely legitimate. However, there are clearly plenty of scenarios where it isn't. In general it isn't possible to determine which is which, and thus tek-tips decided to err on the side of caution. There are plenty of other sites that can provide the necessary information and tools.

Plank,

rather then vb 5 and 6 (which is now 10 years old (vb6)).

I'm (considerably) older than 10, and Jag14.NET v2008 hasn't replaced me yet......
