I have a web site that uses an MSDE database. How do you administer the database (ie, if you have to change a table structure). When I try it says I don't have exclusive access which is probably true. I did try stopping the web site application but that doesn't seem to release the MSDE database. I'm not sure whether this should go in the IIS forum or this one. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.

Cheers.

Spider, what the exact error message that your getting back? Doesn't sound like a message from the SQL Server. Are you using some sort of web based tool to manage the database?

Normally I would use Enterprise Manager if available. If not then use osql to execute the alter table statement(s).

Because I am using MSDE.. I was hooking into the database using Access 2000. Probably not a good idea..

Your not going to be able to make changes to the table from Access.

There is an ASP.Net version on Enterprise Manager available from This allows you to do table changes. Or check the Books Online for the Alter Table Syntax, and run those scripts via osql or isql.

Thanks Denny... I might take to osql approach. One question though .. when you run an alter table statement from osql, does it handle the fact that the db is in use?

Yes it does. The change will not be commited until there are no active transactions. Once the change is made, any pending transactions will be processed.

Great... thanks Denny.
