local admin account password unknown, is there anyway round this without reinstalling
 
So long as you are in a domain yes. Just log in with the domain admin id, right click on My Computer. Choose manage. Click on User & Groups. Click on users. Right click Administrator and choose change password.

If you built a System Recovery Diskette, that will help you as well (as long as you know the password at the time the diskette was built).

Or you can boot from the OS CD and choose System Recovery. For this one you need to know the password that was setup when the OS was first installed.
