adjustment layer

Hi

can someone tell me what one is and how it works?

silly question no doubt but following a magazine tutorial I use the adjustmnent layer to turn a photo black and white nad then set the forground to black to reinstate colour

...adjustment layers can be found at the bottom of the layers palette or under the 'layer > new adjustment layer' menu at the top of your screen...

...there are various options to allow you to make adjustments that are non-destructive allowing you to go back to the original state and to also refer back to adjustments you made later on down the road, save as layered tif pr psd format to preserve the layers...

..adjustment layers also allow you to mask areas that you wish to leave untouched. Painting black on the adjustment layer allows you to reinstate the areas, painting white applies the adjustment. Percentage black can also be used to allow more subtle control...

...the mask on an adjustment layer is on the right of the link icon, defaults to white when first applied...
