Ok, so I've been trying to deal with this problem for a while now.
Since SBC/Yahoo decided to put a block on their SMTP and some other servers that require a password, I switched to cable. Even though this problem happenned with the SBC Yahoo DSL.
Most of the time, the MORE connections I have open with
a network/person, the HIGHER the chances I will lose my
connection and/or get disconnected.
To give you an example: I am on AIM, chatting and stuff,
and sometimes NOTHING else AT ALL is running, and I will
suddenly not be able to recieve messages or load profiles.
(viewing profiles is usualy how I check if I am still connected to the AIM network, that's how bad things got).
then a reconnecting window will popup, after a while, and reconnect me, however, usualy I will notice before this happens due to my constant viewing of the profile and then manualy logoff/reconnect myself.
The connection will most likely be stable for around 5-15 minutes, and then lose its connection with the netowrk/person.
However, if I am running Kazaa, uploading/downloading something from anysource, this will get significally worse.
I will get disconnected more casualy, and sometimes even
after RECONNECTING MANUALLY, I will try to view a profile,
which will not load, meaning I am STILL not connected to the network.
This problem has happenned on ICQ as well.
Even though I can play games (Counter-strike, Warcraft 3,
Diablo2, etc, etc.) it is the SMALL things that keep getting disconnected. This is what confused me.
If I can handle the high amounts of bandwidth shared during multiplayer gaming, why can't I handle a simple connection with AIM, or a connection with AIM even during uploading.
Here is some info you might need:
My computer is FAIRLY good... (p4, 1.7, gf3, 256sdram, etc.)
My internet service provider (ISP) is Adelphia (kind of like Comcast in my area, it provides my television cable as well.)
I reformatted my computer last week, and am constantly checking for spyware with Spyware: Search and Destroy, and Spyblaster, as well as some other spyware remover applications.
I am on a NETWORK with the rest of the house (only 4 comps), we are using a router to connect.
I have oppenned EVERY PORT POSSIBLE, which still didnt work, and then I figured I would try to open the AIM port (5190) which still didnt work and I am still constantly being disconnected. I also openned some default ports people suggested openning on different tech forums (6881-6889).
I am not the type of person that gives up after a problem won't fix itself, I've searched far and wide, tried changing Networking Settings, Internet Settings, programs to control internet connection (zonealarm, and this other one).
Since I couldn't resolve this problem by myself, I turn to you. Please, if you have even a basic knowledge or have a suggestion on what to do, share it with me, for you are now my only hope.
Much appriciation, Daniel P.
