Address configuration conflict 2

I have three computers networked through a router. Internet access is provided through a DSL modem. Computer 1 is a Windows 98SE system and has TCP/IP set up to obtain IP address automatically. This computer works fine on the network and accesses the Internet properly.

Computer 2 is a Windows 2000 system and also works fine with dynamic address selection.

The problem is with Computer 3, which is also a Windows 98SE system. This computer thinks it needs to have a static IP address in order to access the network. If I configure it for dynamic IP address selection, I get the following error on boot-up:

“Microsoft Networking

The following error occurred while loading protocol number 0.
Error 59: A network error has occurred.”

When Computer 3 is configured for static IP address, it works fine on the network, but won’t access the Internet.

I’ve compared all the configuration settings of Computer 3 against those of Computer 1, and can’t find any other discrepancies. Any suggestions?

Do you have a default gateway and/or route defined on Computer 3? Its default gateway needs to point to your router's IP address.

As far as the trouble configuring DHCP for Computer 3, the only thing that I can think of is that there is problem with the IP stack installation. You may want to try unistalling TCP/IP and the NIC driver and reinstalling them. Don't forget to reboot after uninstalling so that Win98 actually stores the configuration information.

Good luck!

You may also need to enter the DNS servers on the PC with a static IP. IPCONFIG /ALL on one of the DHCP PCs should have that info.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I believe jimbopalmer was suggesting WINIPCFG if the working box is Win98.

both WINIPCFG (in the run box) or IPCONFIG /ALL (in a MSDOS Prompt) will work in Win 98, I always use IPCONFIG /ALL as it also works in 95, NT, 2000, XP, 2003, etc.

Figure out how are the other two computers are getting their dynamic ip assignments. As you utilize a router, I’d imagine the router's dhcp server has been configured to provide that service. If so, make sure that the router's dhcp server is configured to provide computer 3 an ip too. If it is not, Computer 3 will auto assign itself an address within the 169.254.xxx.xxx range, unless you've disabled w98se's automatic private ip addressing feature in computer 3.
If I’m on the right track, most likely it's a matter of adding/enabling a client lease for computer 3 in the routers dhcp configuration..

Once you get computer 3's dynamic ip assignment working; if you still have problems accessing Internet via computer 3, then check out the router's filters. if they are anything like my router’s filters, you'll need to mod the rule sets to allow Internet access for computer 3.
