address box and search box fill with forward slashes

Why would the address box in ie fill with forward slashes until you hit the backspace key to stop them. And when you open google the google search box fills with //////////// until you hit the backspace.
A box that I was working on lately was doing this, I found it had a lot of spyware on.
I removed all that I could find but it was still having the problem every now and then.
OS was XP, I repaired the IE6 on it and it seemed to correct the problem but does anyone know what program causes this.
