OK guys, I don't know what's going on with my Microsoft Word 2000, I'm trying to insert an address from my address book while creating an envelope, but when I click the address book icon in Word, I receive the following error:

-------------------------------------------------------
Logon Failed. You must log on to Microsoft Exchange
to access your address book.
Error Code: "Unspecified error"

<OK>
-------------------------------------------------------

What's wrong?

I have the same problem.

Dreamboat,
I can't find Internet Options, Program Tab on Word's 'Tools' tab.

Is it 'Tools' somewhere else?

I have checked the setting as you suggested, and it shows Microsoft Outlook (correct). Can you suggest anything else?

Ok. Answer me this:

1. Are you on an exchange server?
2. Go to Help-About Outlook; do you have corp workgroup (CW) or Internet Mail Only (IMO) installed?

Dreamboat,

1. If an exchange server is part of a network, then the answer is No. I am using a stand-alone PC.

2. I have tried Outlook > About Microsoft Outlook, and I get a list of 20 files which mean nothing to me. I cannot find where it states whether I have CW or IMO installed. Am I using the wrong path? If so could you provide a bit more detail - I am a beginner as far as Windows and Outlook are concerned.

Thanks in anticipation,

Go to Tools.

Do you see "services" or "accounts"

One or the other will be available (among other things), but not both.

Okay, then you are in Internet Mail Only mode (IMO) and you "should" see that. What version of Outlook? (Then, that's my last question and we'll work on a fix...

Under Outlook>Help About, it says Outlook 5.

Underneath that it says 5.00.2615.200

Thanks again.

I'm going to shoot you, pebe. LOL

Outlook 5 is REALLY Outlook Express---which is VERY different from Outlook. If you're ever asking for help with Outlook Express, be specific and include the "express" part. Many people call it OE. No wonder we have been having difficulty! LOL

So, let's regroup.

Open Internet Explorer (IE) and Tools-Internet Options, Programs tab and make sure it says OE not just Outlook. If OE is not available in that list, you'll either need to use Outlook (if it's available in the list) as your email program, or you may need to reinstall OE. Because OE is actually a part of IE, you must reinstall IE to reinstall OE.

Let me know if you understand so far, and what's going on in your Programs tab in IE.

Dreamboat,

Sorry for the hassle I've caused you, but as I said before, I'm a relative novice at Windows and Outlook and didn't appreciate there was a difference between Outlook and OE. I learn every day!

Although I'm designated as a technical user, that is really a hangover from the QBasic forum - in which field I AM a technical user. But that is DOS based, and Windows is a completely different ball game!

I browsed the other forums and saw this thread. I realised it was a problem I was experiencing when writing letters - hence my question.

To return to your question, the 'programs' tab in IE shows the following:-

HMTL Microsoft Word for Windows
EMail Outlook Express
Newsgroups Outlook Express
Internet Call Microsoft NetMeeting
Calender (is blank)
Contact List Address Book

The box 'Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default brouser' is checked.

I hope this is the info you are looking for, and thanks, once again.

Hit Start-Find-Files or folders and type *.pab

Look on your entire hard drive C (or C and D). Tell me how many files you find and how big they are and the modified date.

Tell me what you installed most recently: IE/OE or Word (if you installed them at all)

Tell me whether Word is part of MS Works or Microsoft Office or by itself.

Tell me what happens when you open a Word document and hit File-Send to-Mail recipient as an attachment. Which program opens up? Outlook or Outlook Express (Hit Help and then About)

It finds no *.pab files on C or D. (D is a partition and only used for backups).

Re what was installed most recently. I recently upgraded my machine and purchased from a local dealer. I 'borrowed' the larger hard disk he was to instal and made a backup of all my files and programs on its D partition. I restored all the programs to C but left my personal files backed up, before returning it to him for installation in the new machine. When I collected it, I restored my personal stuff.

Originally, I had loaded Windows 98 SE and the stand-alone Word 2000. Outlook Express may have been provided by the ISP (freeserve.co.uk). I can't remember loading it myself.

When I open Word 2000, then send to mail recipient (as atachment), I get document 1 in Word.
'Help', then 'About Microsoft Outlook Express' shows a panel which says 'Microsoft Outlook 5' and about 20 files.

Reinstall Word. That's all I can give you. The send-to appears to be working right, so I don't get it.

Outlook express uses PAB or WAB files (I forget) for the address book.

I hate ISP software.

I've re-installed Word 2000 over the original installation. Still the same message that Logon failed and I must logon to Microsoft Exchange to access my address book.

De-installed Word, then re-installed - same result.

I can't find Microsoft Exchange anywhere, so it looks like I'll just have to live without an address book.

Many thanks for your effort though, Dreamboat.
