Hello, i am glad I found this forum!

I manage a restaurant and we have two micros touchscreen POS terminals and of course the server in the office.

We have expanded and I am needing to purchase a new touchscreen unit and thermal printer for our patio.

Is there anything I need to be aware of buying a used unit?

How much is the operating a key I need to get from Micros?

How do I determine if the new unit for the patio will be compatible with our current system?

Thank YOU!!!

Compatibility is the main thing to look out for. If you have a 3700, make sure the workstation you buy came from a 3700 system, not a 9700 or 8700. Get the Micros version too since that will also be a factor.

[li]Don't buy Ultra workstations. They're past end of life, and even if they work for you now, once you upgrade your system they won't work anymore.[/li]
[li]Res 3.2 and above can use Eclipse and WS4 terminals.
4.0 and above can also use LX terminals, I'm not sure about 3.2.
Somewhere around Res 4.3 they added in support for WS5 terminals but I'm not sure exactly when. [/li]
[li]If you buy an Eclipse, find out what OS is loaded. If the server is running w2k the workstation will need w95 or w2k. If the server has XP or w2003 the workstation should have XP.[/li]
[li]Make sure the workstation still has the CAL program loaded. If the flash was wiped or the drive formated and loaded fresh it probably won't be work the effort tracking down and loading the program needed to connect to the Micros server.[/li]

Since you don't have to upgrade the foundation code, the add-on license should probably be around $300.

I only work with Res (3700) systems so can't help with the others.

Hi Pmegan,

Thanks for your reply,

I think I am ok, as our touch screens run windows 95. The server runs windows 2000. Same with the new unit we are purchasing.

I am a little confused if this is res 3700 or res 3000 or if there is a difference.

Sorry for the ignorance....

Hi Rich,

3700 and Res 3000 are the same product. It sounds like you should be ok.

One thing I feel that I should point out is that the Win95 clients aren't PCI compliant, so if you accept credit cards through Micros you should probably look into an upgrade. If you get compromised and/or investigated the fines and penalties can make the upgrade costs look like nothing.

yep I think it will work seems like the exact same system.

We do not run credit card through the unit. If we did upgrade to be PCI compatible would we need new workstations or is it just a software upgrade?

Do you think I will need to bring the new unit into our local micros dealer before running it hooked into our system ?

As I am not too familiar I would imagine that would be the best way to go

Thanks for your help!

Rich

Hey Rich,

I'd bring the workstation and printer to the dealer for an inspection before hooking it up. This way they can't claim pre-existing conditions and bill you when you need service on it. They'll probably charge you for the inspection, ours charged us $50/unit for something similar.

The PCI upgrade should work on the existing hardware. You'll have to upgrade the PC and workstations to XP though, and you'll probably have to put more ram into the workstations as well. If your current version is below 4.0 you'll also have to buy a licensing upgrade to Res 4.

When we upgraded we bought new drives for all the eclipse workstations that were pre-loaded with an XP image. It was faster and cleaner than loading XP over 95. The servers we replaced, but they were really old and I had to upgrade 16 restaurants in 10 weeks with no downtime, so upgrading the existing servers wasn't really an option.

However you do it, I'd say to get your Micros dealer involved. They can probably take an image of your hard drive and do the upgrade in their office, then replace the drive in your server and upgrade the live database. This way if there are any issues you're not dead in the water while they figure out what went wrong.
