i'm needing to add a xp pro workstation to a windows sever 2003 workgroup. it is not a domain just a workgroup, peer to peer it seems. let me say I know nothing of servers so I'm iffy about this. I do realize it should be relatively easy. I have a user setup on the server with a password. When i go to the workstation, I check my password, my user account name, my workgroup name, all appears correct yet I cannot see anything on the network or on the internet. I did run a microsoftfixit50135.msi to fix an issue 2 weeks ago on a different pc in this work group. that pc could hit the internet but not see the network. After the fix was ran it could see everything fine So i tried this fix on the pc I'm trying to add to the workgroup now and I could hit the internet but still not the network. I then tried a couple of things and now I'm back to not seeing anything on the net or the network. please help this simpleton get this pc joined to this workgroup and seeing the net and network.
thanks in advance

First is there a reason there isn't an domain setup? Have you checked the firewall on the XP box, it is possible it could be that. Also make sure you have the workgroup name spelled correctly. I know that sounds crazy but I have miss spelled things before. Could also be a MS license issue, do you gave enough client licenses?

This server was setup by some one else. I'm not sure why it's not a domain. I did turn off the firewall on the xp box. i checked the naming of all things thrice. How can I check the licensing?
thanks by the way

Did you give the XP workstation an IP address? Can you ping the server from the problem XP workstation by IP and/or by name? Guess my main question is did you configure the tcp/ip settings on the problem XP workstation correctly?

it is set to obtaim automatically as all pc's on this network are. the server is the dhcp. Yes I can ping the server in cmd prompt.

In the server under manage server or control panel you can look for licensing there.

have plenty of licensing. I'm not sure of the procedure for doing what i want. maybe I went out of step or something. go to server and give user account in question a password. go to pc and hook up to network, give pc user account name as in serverand correct password as in server then all should work correct?

Ok your not on a domain so how do your users logon to the pc?
