I have an nt4 server which has an hp2000c as a print device. When setting up the printer, I can only choose upto win95 in the drivers list. I need to add the drivers for w98, w2k and xp. How can this be done?

You can always go to HP.com and get the additional drivers that you need to load. They have them available for download with the exception of XP.

Update...the XP drivers are available from HP...just need to look in the specific XP area.

I think the issue is that when NT server is acting as a print server it "holds" the drivers for other OS's so that when the client attaches to the printer (shared from the Server)it downloads the required driver from the server itself, rather than having to install it locally.

In this case, the admin is trying to serve up drivers for an OS not "recognised" by NT4.0. I have had a similar problem recently, when several of my workstations were upgraded to Win 2K Pro- even though the drivers installed on the Server supported both NT and 2000, the Server was not offering up a full-featured driver to the 2K client. I never did come up with a satisfactory solution, instead I would up installing the drivers locally and bypassing the print server altogether. This isn't a problem in a small infrastructure, but if you are dealing with even a moderate number of clients (say, just 20), it can be a very time consuming project.

So, any hints/suggestions would be aprreciated.

Just a little note. You can use Win98 drivers for Win2k, they share a common Window architecture (I can't remember off hand what MS call it). New Zealand, a great place to visit.

We have a similar set up with all 2000 clients and NT4.0 servers. I had a printer that would not work unless I had the win2k driver loaded.
To add the driver
1.Logg on as a domain admin on a 2000 workstation
2.Download the Win 2K drivers
3.Install the network printer that needs the new driver
4.Install a local printer using the 2000 driver(just bind it to LPT1)
5.Go to the properties of the network printer and goto the sharing page
6.Click additional drivers, you should now be able to check the box for windows 2000.
7.After you hit OK the drivers will be uploaded from your win2k box to the server and available for all win2k users.
