I am writing an intranet and have added links to other intranets. We have access to clients sites which everyone with access to the site I am working on also have access to, but the user names and passwords are different formats. I would like to add the user name and password for the external links to the hyperlink in my site.

Any idea how this can be done?

I have tried this, it gives HTTP 404. I have also tried "URL username : password" which opens the link but does not log on

sorry Wullie, this syntax does not work here. It gives 404. The link works perfectly well without the username:password@ bit

yes it is exactly the same URL, another user suggested i use url user:pass which opens the page but does not log in. using your syntax it runs the whole thing ito the adress bar and gives 404...
