Adding server to existing network how to be done...

hi all, im quiet new to this sort of issue so you may need to endure

I have an existing network that is a little something like this:

4 Desktops (DT) and 6 Laptops (LT).... desktops all connected into a switch in P2P network...
LT's all using WLAN wireless lan cards connected to a wireless router... which is patched into my Switch with all the Desktops.... so can all see each others shared drives/folders... all users can access internet through an ADSL broadband connection router which is patched in to my switch...

Not quiet sure how the IP addresses are working on this network but..... Does the ADSL router act as a DHCP server and assign all devices on network with an ip ddress?
Or are the DT's on a different subnet to Laptops? i.e. is the Wireless router acting as a DHCP for LT's and ADSL router acting as DHCP for DT's?...... *confused on that one.

Ok anyway the main question was ... i Now want to add a server into this network and make it a server client network.... How would i add a server into this existing network? would i need to leave everything pretty much as it is and get me a server with two NIC's and connect one to the ADSL router and one to the switch?....

If this is the best way how then would i configure each NIC? would i treat the laptop router differently to the Desktops? or would that all be seen as one domain?....
Would i set the Server up as a proxy server? and adsl router as gateway?... could do with some reading up on that, anyone know any good articles or books on this sort of issue?

Hi,

To see wether or not your router acts as an DHCP server logon to it. Most routers have a web interface. This is also described in the manual.

Everything you want will be going through the server? If that is what you want. For example the server can handle the DHCP.

But where do you want to use the server for? Your routers handle some of the services you want. Only a proxy server is not handled.

I don't think you should treat the lt router different than the desktops. You probaply would get some extra problems with it.
