Hello!

I tried adding an scci card to an SCO 5.0.6a box but after boot, the card is not shown on 'hwconfig' nor while boot sequence. The card is, however, shown by BIOS when I first turn computer on.

I do not see an option in 'makedev' to add an adapter. How do I go about this?

Thanks;

I guess this SCSI adapter is for new disk.
So you have to do 2 times [tt]mkdev hd[/tt]
The 1st for the adapter
The 2nd, after reboot (and successfull hwconfig) for the disk.

Hope This Help, PH.

PHV,

Actually, it is for a tape drive. Must I do same?

1. mkdev hd
2. mkdev tape

Thanks;

I am confused. mkdev tape gives me option to add/remove tape but not to configure an adapter.

If I choose to add a new tape, it will ask me for adapter type, lum, ID, ... Unless I successfully install the apadter, I cannot figure these out (well, I do not know how).

How is adding an adapter possible through this option? What would my answers be?

I truly appreciate your assistance!

It is an adaptec AHA-2940 80-PIN to connect a DDS Internal tape drive.

It is an adaptec AHA-2940 80-PIN
If 2940 the prefix of the SCSI host adapter is alad
If 2940U2W then choose blad.
BTW, is your DDS drive detected by the adapter ?

During boot, prior to OS boot, I get the usual SCCI adapter message and option to configure it ... CTRL-A ...

If I am not mistaken, card does find device as I think to have noticed different message when I pulled tape drive out trying to trouble-shoot my situation. So, I like to say yes, the card and connect with one another during initial boot sequence and prior to OS load ...

Through the OS boot, however, there is nothing resembling the adapter nor the drive.

I am a bit (a lot actually) confused with the mkdev to add the adapter. I remember messing with mkdev tape once and adding/removing devices created a huge mess and I had to clean it all up manually - Can't remember the files I had to clean (mkdev leaves garbage behind). Of course, this was an older version and possibly no longer an issue.

I will experiment and see what happens. Thanks so much !!!

Good luck.

PHV,

You are a genius and thank God not in a bottle ;-)

I did exactly as you told me to and all is well. I do not know if it would have made any difference but for the next guy/gal, it might be worth mentioning

1. As I booted PC, I entered SCSI configuration and found device ID (in my case it was device ID 7)

2. I `mkdev tape` and proceeded as if I was adding a new tape drive. When asked for target ID, I used 7

3. I had pulled card and tape drive from an old SCO box and knew off hand that I had the tape drive configured under target ID 4 (this can be found out by using `sconf -v`) ...

4. Relinked, rebooted and did `mkdev tape` a second time. This time, I used target ID 4. I was advised that there was another device ... bla ... bla ... and I chose to make current device default and override previous ...

5. I installed my favorite backup software (BackupEdge) and it found my drive using autodetect and as I write this, my first full system backup is in progress ...

Life is wonderful!

Thank you so very much. I would have never done this without your help.

Regards;
