I have a p-III 500 already running XP pro on a 12 GB HD. I have a DVD-R and a CD-R on my secondary IDE channel. I have another 20GB HD on which I previously installed RedHat 8 which i'd like to add. I'm not trying to dual boot or anything. Im not concerned whether or not ill have to reinstall linux on the second drive. I cant get my system to recognize a Primary Slave AT ALL.

Both drives work prefectly fine one at a time in either of the IDE cable positions. So I know it's not a cable or HD issue.

My XP HD is set to Master, Nix to Slave.
Xp Boots, bios does not see the slave
I tried a million different bios settings
(bios says, Pri Slave Failed, F1 to continue)

My MB is from 99, it has Large disk support.

any insight would be extermely helpful.

Sorry, but what does "Nix to Slave" mean? If you jumper the 20GB as Slave and have that as the only drive on the IDE cable, is it recognized?

by nix to slave I meant the 20 GB HD with linux istalled on it has its jumpers set to SLAVE.
Im running JUST the Linux HD right now, set to cable select, works great. ill set it to slave and give it a try and reply the results.

I just tried it, set the Linux 20 GB to SALVE and unplugged the XP HD alltogether. Tried to boot, BOIS says "Primary Master Hard Drive Failed" then tried to boot from CD.

Set both the XP and Linux drives to Cable Select. Give it a try. If it doesn't work , in BIOS, set the IDE Primary Master and Slave to Auto Detect.
