Adding random images to webpage

Hello
I have a website that has a subfolder with @5,000 small gif images stored in it. I need to randomly place a selection of these pictures on a webpage.
I have a template that will place the pictures where they are supposed to go, but what language should I use to randomly pick the images? Is this something I can do with html or should I look at javascript?

I'd look at a server-side language for this. Most likely whatever your hosting company supports.
