I have a couple of large documents broken into many sections for formatting different sections into different # of columns.
When I try and insert page numbers, it applies the numbering to the footer in only the section the cursor is currently in. There is no provision in the dialog box to apply the page numbering to all sections. Surely there must be some way. Am I missing something very simple?
Thanks,
John

You are missing how Sections work. Clearly you have the sections set with SameAsPrevious = False. In other words, you have sections that do NOT match the previous section footer.

If they were all the same - SameAsPrevious = True - then putting the page numbers in the first Section would make it in all sections.

Is this a big issue? You can simply click Show Next on the headerfooter toolbar, get the next footer, and insert the page number.

Thanks, Yes, that works, and is a little easier than adding page numbers manually.
I just thought this is tedious when you have 150 pages most broken up into sections of 1 or 2 pages, and thought there must be a way of set all footers "same as last" at once then 'add page numbers' and have them added automatically to all pages.

It depends on how you added the sections. By default new sections DO repeat the previous section header and footer. You have to explicitly turn it off. If your sections are not SameAsPrevious, then someone actually turned that off.

The only way I know of to add a Section break that isn't formatted 'Same as Previous' is by copying & pasting an existing one that's been formatted that way.

It's easy enough to see whether you have "same as previous" set - just view the footer.

I can imagine (odd) scenarios where you have many small sections with continuous section breaks and/or "different first page" footers set, where you might think page numbering was not being propagated. Hard to say much more without seeing the document but what Gerry says is correct. - if it's non-standard, somebody has done it.

Enjoy,
Tony
