I manage a sharepoint portal with approx. 50+ users. Lately when I try to add a new user with reader privelages for limited access to only certain discussions they either get completely denied access or they get access but a password prompt pops up two or three times. All they have to do is cancel out of the prompts and they still get access. There are other issues as well but I was wondering has others found that Microsoft Sharepoint is full of bugs? Is this something I have done to cause it to be unstable? Thank you for your response. These pages are very critical for our company's clients and we are losing creditibility.

Hello,

I have seen this problem before and in my cases it has been that there is a permission problem. If you for example are displaying a webpart on the homepage which these readers does not have access to (i.e you have added a restricted document library as a webpart) they got prompted for username and password.

Also, if you only give users read permissions for a particualr Discussion list, but not for any other parts of your site, they need to use a direct link to the Disucssion lists and not the URL for the Homepage of the site.

A third thing to check, is in Internet Explorer if you have added the site to the Trusted or Local Intranet Zone of the users web browsers.

Most likely there is a permission somewhere that is causing your problems.

I am using my sites in the same way you describe, with only limited access for some users to certain lists and that works fine now.

Cheers,
Thomas
