I needed to add 2 more tapes to a backup on the Exchange server. I cannot inventory, catalog, label, or erase the new tapes on the server. I have a server next to it running 8.6 and it would do all that with no problems. My conclusion is that it is not the tapes. Any suggestions?

Was the 8.6 server using the same tape drive as the 9.0 server? The only time I experienced 9.0 giving those kinds of problems it turned out there was a tape stuck in the drive portion of my autoloader. Since all the slots were filled the tape in the drive had nowhere to go, so Backup Exec behaving very oddly and not telling me what the actual problem was. After I figured out what was wrong, I removed the extra tape, stopped backup services, power-cycled the autoloader, then started backup services again. Backup Exec 9.0 went back to being its normal self after that.

So if your 8.6 server was using its own tape drive, you my want to look into the condition of the drive your 9.0 server is trying to use. If they were both using the same tape drive, then it makes my whole post a moot point!

Both are Seagate drives although the one in the Exchange server is an older drive. Both use Travan tapes and we do not have an autoloader (Unless I count as that). Now that you mention it, I think one is SCSI and the other is IDE.

I remember my days as a human autoloader, fun times (not really). Has the 9.0 drive been cleaned recently? Have you tried a reboot? Sometimes power-cycling the drive and restarting Backup Exec services helps the two get back into synch with each other.

Servers do a scheduled reboot every night about 0330. The drives were cleaned yesterday and the statistics reset to zero. The tapes are new out of the box. I have another machine with tapeware and they will format on that too. The exchange server job just sits there with nothing happening. I started the label media job and left to take care of another problem and it ran for over a half hour and it usually takes about 3 minutes to complete. I'm stumped unless it has to do with the drive itself although the backup jobs run complete.........
