Need to add new mirror hard drive to an existing unix system.

What type and of hardware are you using ?<br><br> <p>-Danny<br><a href=mailto: > </a><br><a href= > </a><br>

i've got the same problem, need to mirror a harddisk so that if it will crash we can restart the server using the mirrored hardisk within a few minutes.
The hardisk is using SCO unix ver 3.2 over an intel 486.
HD specifications are :Quantum 540s (Scsi device)
The whole filesystem is on this harddisk, there aren't partitions of any kind.

You can use a hardware soloution which entails a raid contoller card.

Or you can Software, such as the SCO Virtual disk Manager.

I recommend the raid controller card. Adaptec has a few.

I can't really afford the cost of a raid controller :( i'd like a cheap software solution since the backup is to be performed only this time (it's just for security purposes) we will never need to do another backup cause data stored on the hd is like static (just a few kb are written new each time)
Are you sure this SCO Virtual disk manager exist on sco 3.2 ?
i heard about supertars ..... that would be a nice easy solution but they are so expensive! 300$ is too much for my pocket ;\

You could duplicate the operating system on another drive ( this would be a new install on the new drive only ) then mount it as a second drive. Use script files to update data files overnight. In case of failure pull the first out, rejumper the second to first, let it clean itself, and be up and running. would require some manipulation as you change users and hardware. Note that the new drive would need users and hardware changes to match it to the first drive so switch out would be painless.
