I'm planning on adding another 9.1 GB external SCSI drive to my server, but don't want to lose any data or permissions. It is configured RAID 5 and right now I have about 36GB of space (5 physical drives). It's my understanding that I have to do a full backup of the data, and then "delete" the logical RAID drive(36GB), add the disk, recreate the logical drive(now 45GB), and restore the files/permissions. Is this correct? Any more detailed advice for me? Thanks in advance!

if you delete the hardware raid config, you might loose your data...

I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work

I think that it might be possible with some harware raid systems to expand the raid array without loseing data!

Might be worth investigating this before trashing the array!

Metty,

The way that you are suggesting:
Make a full backup, delete the logical RAID, add new hardware, recreate the logical drive and restore the data from the tape is how I have done it.
It was a success because you have all of the rights are saved with the backup.
Good luck

if it is a hardware raid on a decent controller, there may be an expansion option under the BIOS. Obviously take a backup first just in case, but you may find there is no need for the backup and restore as it will just expand the drive for you and once you boot into the OS everything will be fine.

What is your hardware? With Compaq, IBM, Dell & HP (and probably many more) you can expand the array without deleting it.

Yes...it depends on the RAID controller......some you can expand others you have to do what you suggested....backup, create a new array, and restore.....

HI!

Another option to consider is to add a drive not in the RAID array, and use it for archiving old files, for temp files or some other use.

Anyway if you're planning to add it to a hardware based RAID, you must:
1) Read the RAID manuals.
2) Make sure that the new drive is compatible with the other current drives.
Using the exact same model is recomended and sometimes mandatory.

Also check the capacity of your Backup device.
