Hello everyone. I am the newest addition to my company’s IT dept. and have been tasked with learning the Merlin system that we use. Thanks to everyone on this forum. Previous posts have been very helpful in learning the Merlin system.

I looked for a couple of days both here and in the manuals and I have a question (or questions) regarding adding new modules without ruining voicemail programming or losing saved greetings/voice messages. My apologies if the answers to this are elsewhere and I didn't find them.

Current setup: Magix 3 v7. (‘GLM-U’ modules are reported as such by System inventory, but are labeled on the outside as 408 GS/LS-MLX)

Carrier 1
0 – Processor: CKE5 (w/ Legend 2M Translation Card)
1 – 408 GLM-U
2 – 408 GLM-U
3 – 408 GLM-U
4 – 408 GLM-U
5 – 408 GLM-U

Carrier 2
6 – 008 MLX
7 - 408 GS/LS-MLX
8 - 408 GS/LS-MLX
9 - 408 GS/LS-MLX
10 – 012 w/ ring gen.
11 – 007 MLM (reported by sys inv as ‘012’)

Carrier 3
Installed but empty

So the question(s):

Must the 007 MLM be at the end of the other modules to work correctly, or can I add other 408 GS/LS-MLX modules without physically moving the voicemail module? If I have to move the MLM and the 012 to other slots, what is the risk of losing programming and/or saved voicemails? (I believe it uses flash rather than a hard drive for storage.)

And out of curiosity: Is there a way to update the firmware of the 408 GS/LS-MLX modules? (We have two different firmware versions in the system) and Why do the 408 GS/LS-MLX units in carrier one report differently than those in carrier two.

Thanks for any answers you might have.

With the Merlin you can put the modules in any order you want. You can just program the cards after it with whatever extensions you want.

If you install any circuit modules AFTER the existing MLM, then you should be okay without having to renumber any voicemail ports. Just keep in mind that after you install any new modules, you will need to do a Board Renumber. It is when you remove and replace modules BEFORE the MLM will you run into problems. (unless it is a like for like swap).

Make sure you power the system down prior to adding any new modules. The different firmware versions on the cards doesn't matter on the Merlin Legend/Merlin Magix. I would leave them be unless they are having issues.

Another tip - I always number the voicemail module in a different extention range - from the very beginning (e.g., starting at ext 600) - so it makes the job of adding modules and doing later renumbering of extentions easy).
