Just a quick questions -- My darling boss is a Mac addict and would really love it if I would replace his nasty old Win98 box with a spiffy new iMac running OSX. The office is running Win2K server on a Ethernet 10/100 network and all other clients are Win98 or Win2Kpro. What do I need to know?

1. can it be done
2. what extra stuff/software/hardware do I need?
3. what problems/issues/challenges should I be aware of?

Thanks!

Heidi

Add Appletalk protocol to Win2K. If you use DHCP, set OS X to use DHCP.

You don't need anything else. No extra hardware or software required.

When you create shares, you create BOTH Mac and NT shares. If you already have an NT share you can create a Mac share to point to the same place. These Mac shares are then seen via Chooser and logging onto the server.

OS X 10.1.5 will alow you to connect to a Windows share through an NT domain connection and probably with plain IP as well. Win2k is currently not supported.

Apple is about to release Jaguar (a new version of OS X) around September 2002 which will allow better file sharing with Windows clients. Hopefully with Active Directory as well as with NT domains.

I have OS X 10.1.5 running Samba server 2.2.4 (which I compiled using the Developer Tools for OS X <free>). I setup a share and Windows clients can see me in our organization's NT domain and access the share that they have rights to. Right now Samba server is not compatible with Win2k's Active Directory but a new version of Samba is forthcoming will support it.

OS X 10.1 (currently at 10.1.5) supports Active Directory already. There's a very in depth PDF on the Apple site.

OS 10.2 will connect directly to LDAP without special mac shares or UAMs.

With the LDAP protocol do you need to do anything special in the settings to connect to a Win2000 Server?
