I have a two 36.4 GB hdds in a RAID 1 config, running Linux. I need to upgrade these drives to two 146GB drives with minimum downtime and maximum ease. What i was thinking of doing was taking out one of teh 36.4 drives and putting in a 146 drive, hoping raid would then build the 146 (although it will discard 109.6 GB of space)to be the same as the 36.4. THen do the same with the second 146. Then remove teh 36.4s and run off the 146s although they will only show as 36.4s. THen use a partition tool to get the extra space.

Does this theory sound feasible? Also are there tools available for Linux (debian) that will allow me to extend the partitions to get back the extra space.

why not back everything up to tape, install one of the new drives, restore data, then install second drive, create the mirror and you are done.
