adding internal CDRW drive to an imac

My brother has an imac and has asked me to find him a cdrw drive for it.
I am wondering if I can use an internal cdrw drive in a firewire 5.25" drive enclosure.
If I can will any drive work in it with the mac or are some not compatible with macs.
Finally are there any good cheaper alternatives to Toast?
