Adding EMC SRDF luns to VG on DR server

Hi all

We needed to extend a VG by adding another lun to the VG. These luns are SRDF luns, so the luns also appear on our DR server.

The VG is currently varied off on the DR site, how do I go about adding these luns to the VG? Tried the usual method via SMIT but I got the message I need to vary on the VG first, something I cannot do until we do a DR. This not ideal as I don't want to discover at DR time that it doesn't work.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Hello there,
I don't think you can add a PV to a VG which is variedoff, you have to varyon the VG and extend the disk.

you can use the direct command
# extendvg <vgname> <hdiskX>

I would think you could, but I have never tried this with SRDF.
primary: varyonvg -b -u VGNAME ( unloack vg )
secondary: importvg -LVGNAME -n HDISKX( not disk that was added )
secondary: lspv to verify disk is in vg
Primary: varyonvg -u VGNAME ( re-lock vg )

Hmmm,
If I am reading it right aixmurderer wants to add a PV on DR site (passive) and NOT on active node.

The -b and -u flags on varyonvg are to unlock the disk reserve policy.

The -L flag on importvg is to takes the VG and learns about possible changes performed to that VG, suppose you added a new LV to VG this flag will acknowledge it on the other node.

Basically, what I wanted to say is you have to have the VG in varied on state to extend the PV.

This is how we extend a cluster disk on the offline node.
So you extend the primary site which updates the local disk, let SDRF copy this update to the DR site. Then you import the vg which now contains the new volume at the DR site, without varyon at the dr site.

Forget it i think SDRF will not allow read access. your only option is during an outage or DR.

Thanks all for the advice, I have resolved the issue, needed to add the new disks to the SRDF group mirror as well, something I wasn't aware of. (symld -g <group_name> add dev <dev+id>)

And you guys we right, while the secondary site is in read-only mode you pretty much can't do much. We did a split (symrdf -g <group_name> split), exported the VG on the DR site, re-imported it with the "-n" (to prevent varyonvg) which then added the new disks to the VG, and finally reestablished the sRDF mirror again.
