Can I add a domain user to a W2K server machine? This server is not a domain controller and does not have AD installed. I can add the machine to the domain. But I can't add the domain user to the machine.

Djlaplant,

Not quite sure what you are asking. Is this server a member of the domain?

In an Active Directory domain you add domain users by using the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in while at a Domain Controller. Anyone logging onto the domain would then be validated by the domain.

If you need more help, can you please give more details on what it is you are trying to accompllish.

I have an application that needs to run on the server as a domain user. This is so that the application can have shared access to a file on another server on the domain.

I can add the server to the domain using a domain user id. However, when I try to change the user the service runs as to the domain user, I get an error.

When I try to add the domain user as a local user I get an error.

AD is not installed on this server.

How can you haev domain users whne you don't have AD instaled? have you NT then?

You can add the domain user to one of your Local groups on the Win2K Server via the Computer Management snap-in. Is this what you are trying to do when you receive an error message? If so, what is the error message?

It does not allow domain users to be added to groups in W2K Server (unlike W2K Pro).

That statement is simply not true. Is your server a member of the domain?

Patty

Local group can contain:
- Local user accounts
- Domain user accounts from any domain
- Global groups from any domain

But be sure that that server is a member server to your AD.

Djlaplant,

Ok, now we are getting somewhere.

If you cannot contact the domain, then of course you cannot add a user from that domain to the local machine. First thing to do is to find out why you cannot contact the domain.

Have you joined the server to the domain?

Can you ping the Domain Controller by IP and DNS name?

Patty

Gia, Patty,

Thanks for your help. We found we had to explicitly input the DNS addresses (under TCP/IP properties) and add a WINS address (under Advanced, WINS). That allowed it to see the domain. It's still dynamic IP however.

Best regards,

David
