I added a domain controller to create a new domain on the new server we have. However now that ive rebooted the login is Username: password: domain: and i cannot change the domain to "THIS COMPUTER" (its set on the new domain name) so i extracted the hash for the admin password thinking (maybe whoever set up the server used a different pw then normal) brute forced it over the weekend. and here it is monday morning ive found out that the password pulled out of the hash IS INDEED the password i have been using. but for some reason i cannot log in? (Incorrect username or password). any tips?

- Why didnt we just start out keeping things simple?

You can login using "administratotr" and no password localy. If you made a child domain you can make a administrator account on the root domain and login. There is a trust. If the server cant find the root domain than login localy to the dc and pint dns to the rootserver (or a server that has dns for the rootdomain)

Charles,

Once you DCPROMO a server you can no longer log in locally to it - you can only log into the domain. You will have to use the domain administrators password to login. Is this new domain part of a forest? If it is, are the other domains listed in the "Domain" drop down list at the login screen?

How stupid of me.
There are no local users and groups on a dc :)

I pressed F8 to disable active directory...logged in as local admin. then found(downloaded) a windows service that allows you to change the Domain Admin password. Now i just have to make sharepoint work! IT...its an endless battle isnt it fellas?

I ment to say i pressed F8 at startup. after bios.

It certainly sounds a mess!

What was on the server before you promoted it? Was it a new build? Might be worth starting from scratch if it was

pressing f8 to disable active directory !! it could be me but i realy dont think that's possible. After dcpromo there is no "local" anymore.
How did you promoted that machine to dc in the first place can you tell me that please.
