We have a Meridian 0x32 (Norstar Plus MICS v4) system and I need to add one extension to the system as we've hired one additional employee. I have an empty port with an extension assigned to the port, but it rings Not in Service. I can not find and docs on how to add an/or initialize a DN. Any advice? Thanks!

DN's are automatically assigned to a port.
It is only necessary to connect the phone to a working available port.
If you are getting a time and date on the new extension verify the DN number by pressing feature*0 intercom.

David - Then I guess a better question would be - how would I go about adding ports to the system? I have other Not in Service DN's but no port mapped to them in the limited "documentation" our system has. Is it just a matter of bringing pairs over from the box and adding them to our patch panel and then connecting the phone to the working port?

Also, if I am not getting a time and date on the new extension, but the port has pairs and was previously assigned a phone, what's next? How would one determine if a port where working or not? Thanks!

No time and date= no active port
The KSU is an 0x32 meaning that you can add 32 devices to the KSU.
Voicemail ports count as devices.
If you have an unconnected available port then the port is cross connected to the required jack.
If the cabling is correct plugging in the phone will give you a time and date.
If you are out of ports you will need to buy the required expansion hardware.
A fiber expansion card is used to expand hardware capabilities to the KSU.
0x16 station modules are plugged into the expansion card via fiber optic cable.
0x16 module adds 16 expansion ports to the system.

Ok. I still have no time or date when I plug the phone into the port that appears to once have been active. Our system has an 0x32 module, (2) 0x16 modules, and (1) 12x0 module - which should total 76 ports (unless there's another way to calculate ports). When I add up all my extensions, voicemail, etc. I get 68 so there must be something I'm missing. Any thoughts?

Did you try reversing polarity? I have had a few instances where that was necessary to make the phone, in spite of the book

make sure you have a working phone

ONLY 17 WEEKS TILL SKI SEASON STARTS

Have you tried plugging a phone into the patch panel to see if it works there. in my company at all locations the phone switch is connected to a patch panel and we use patch cords to connect to the station cables that go to the phones, so if it works at the patch panel and I have it cross connected it should work at the jack where the phone ids plugged in.

it looks like u dont have the jack wired to the correct Tn.
Never had polarity issues with Norstar ever.
U need to connect to correct free tn and u wil be fine. Time and display shows if u connect it after a few seconds.

Spend some money get a technician in.

1st, Check your wiring. Plug a tone in on the the station jack, and see what pair it comes out on the station block. On station block one, which supports DNs 221-244, the 25th pr (v-s) does not support a station. On sta block 2,DNs 245-250 + voicemail ports 251&252, the stations end on the r-gr pair. This is just to see what port an DN you are on. The wiring is ok, otherwise you would get no display message at all.

When you get the error message "Not In Service", this means the system has taken this set out of service.

Go into the maintenance mode of programming, find the port/DN you found by tracing your wiring, and test the module and then the device (set). Disable it, and then enable it. The state should then read "idle". Next, check the programming to see that it has the correct lines (if in doubt, copy a similar set).

That should do it.

According to your earlier statement, you have a KSU & 2 station modules & a trunk module. If you have 68 extensions including voicemail, you only have 64 station ports. Your 12x0 module supports trunks, not stations.
Go to Maintenance and check the ports one at a time starting at 101. Determine where your mods are plugged in to the 6-port expansion card, from 3 to 8 from bottom to top. The station modules should be in 3 & 4 (typically) and the trunk mod in 8, at the top.
Not knowing what software version you run, when in Maintenance, each port will show the DN, port and a lit LCD triangle after the DN if the port is 'equipped'. When you see the triangle, press the 'Device' softkey to show what kind of set is on the port.
Starting at port 101, press next to show each port through 132, 301 to 316, 401 to 416. When you show the trunk module it will show something like 801 L049, indicating Line 049, or the first trunk in the trunk module for port 8 (again depending on the software version).
I apologize for being so verbose, but it sounds to me like you have no ports left. If you do, you will find them in Maimtenance.
