Adding devices on SCO 6 after installation

This is starting to really bug me.
Is there a safe (perhaps even "Simple") way to add devices to SCO-6 after installation?
Two examples.
I have a system which only had COM1 enabled when the O/S was installed. I've since enabled COM2 (a BIOS setting) with the standard resources (IRQ=3, IO=2f8). How do I get SCO-6 to "see" this device?

I have another system with a RAID controller running the boot and data drives. I've added an Adaptec 29160 card just to run the tape drive. How do I get SCO-6 to load the "adst70" driver?

In both cases, I've had to completely re-install the O/S. Once that is done, all the devices are visible. This is a "workaround", but this is crazy. You can't do that once the system is "in the field".

I believe the tools are "dcu" and "resmgr", but I'm finding no joy.
Back in the 5.0.X days, we had tools like "mkdev tape" and "mkdev serial".

Frustrated....

you still have mkdev serial.

Hope This Helps, PH.

Thanks, PHV:
Yes, but there is no "Add" button. There is only the option to change the configuration of the existing tty1a/tty1A port (and USB, which is a different animal).
I contacted our SCO supplier's support and their tech guy said he normally just gives up and re-installs to get the O/S to recognize new hardware.

I'll keep digging. There HAS to be a better way. The "dcu" and "resmgr" utilities are probably the answer, but I believe they would be unforgiving for experimentation.

I collected a bit more information, then just threw caution to the wind and took a shot:

Adding a second Serial I/F in SCO 6

Second Serial I/F enabled in BIOS (IRQ=3/IO=2f8-2ff)
System already had SCO 6 loaded, but it didn’t automatically recognize the second port.

Ran “dcu”
Selected “Software Device Drivers”
Selected “Communications Cards”
F5=New
Entered these parameters:
UNIT 2
IPL 9
ITYPE 4
IRQ 3
IOStart 2F8
IOEnd 2FF
MemStart 0
MemEnd 0
DMA -1
BindCPU (blank)

(Note: The IPL and ITYPE are the same as the existing "COM1" device.)

The new entry now appears in DCU (Hardware Device Configuration) screen.

Ran these commands:
# cd /etc/conf/bin
# ./idconfupdate –f
# ./idmknod
# ./idbuild –B

Rebooted. Now the second Serial I/F *appears* to be available.
