Adding color to images?

Well when you create an image by default it is grey and black. Lets just say I wanted the image to go from orange to black from right to left. But this would only effect the gray sections. Or when I am using a brush, how can I make this brush appear in a specific color?

Click either the foreground or background colour (they're shown below the tools, on the left), select the desired colour from the selector dialogue, and click OK. That selected colour will be used as your brush colour.
