adding Catalyst 3750 to switch stack

I ran into some problems adding a catalyst 3750 switch to an existing switch stack. I set the priority on the Master switch so it would stay the master after the re-election. I powered down the switches, recabled the stack ports, and powered them back up. The POST was successful so I logged in and did a show switch detail. All switches were in the 'Ready' state. Then I started getting tons of STACKMGR-6-STACK_LINK_CHANGE, the stack-port would go down, then come back up. Then I started receiving the following messages:
STACKMGR-6-HDM_GET_DEVICE_RECORD_FAIL: Device Manager could not get device record.

Any help with this is much appreciated.
