I have a table-1 ( for example ) and want to create a new table-2 out of it with the addition of autonumber field in it. so that whenever there is a addition of next record in table-1, autonumber would add a next number to it.

should i use the function count(*) or append query for such a problem ?

I would use the append method - but why have the same or allmost the same data i 2 tables.
If you want to know how many records tabel-1 is holding you could use, as you mention, Count.

There is at least one problem with using autonumber. As soon as you start writing a record, Access assigns a number to the autonumber field. If you change your mind and don't save the record that number is used and that field is then not showing the correct number of records in your table.
