I want to add a record field to assist in updates.

I have created the field created the record as a primary key and pressed the operations key
If I "add incremental" I get missing value in the form as a reply.

The version of phpmyadmin is 2.6.4-pl4

What have I missed I have been playing with this for hours

Unless I did not understand your quest

You should not have any field in your form that is expected to feed an auto incremented col.

It should be an INT value that does what it is supposed to do: Auto increment (on its own).

I fully agree, it is only used to speed up updates, the auto incremental value is completly hidden.

The "field" referred to is in the table alone.

I knew it was a stupid mistake.

if the field options are opened up on the far right is a field called extras.

My screen was just the wrong size & it was not obvious that there were extra fields to the RHS

Thanks everyone I have losing hair over this & I havn't got a great deal to start with
