Hi all,

I am trying to add a host record on our W2k DNS server for a name that is :

name.host.domain.ny.us

However the GUI will not let me use periods to seperate the host name. Anyone know how to enter this? I use AD intergrated zones and need this DNS entry for a application. I have used the hosts file, but I rather have it in the DNS server. Any suggestions would be great!

Load the DNS console goto the zone/domain you want to edit > right click > add domain, enter the new name ie host > double click the new domain > enter new A record.

I have tried that but Windows does not allow me to use '.' to separate the domain name e.g. sales.support.acme.com. It will not allow the use of periods '.' There must be a way to do it though, to add a record for a third level name and higher.

You need to have a zone called sales.support.acme.com in DNS in order to create a host with that suffix.

Ok you didnt follow what i said.

Creating name.host.domain.ny.us

Load the DNS console
Goto the zone domain.ny.us
Right Click the zone new domain
Put "host" in the box that comes up then press ok.
Now right click the "host" that you just created it will appear as a folder, select "New Host(A)" from the menu.
Put in "name" in the top box and enter the IP in the bottom box.

By using this as a host name.host.domain.ny.us you have created a subdomain of domain.ny.us

Thanks for the replies. What I am trying to do is to add this record to dns, this domain is outside of my domain. Currently I need to place a hosts file entry so that clients can resolve the name, but I want to use DNS. Can I still create a zone even though its outside my domain?
