Adding a switch to the network

Hi,

I would like to know if it is possible to add a switch to our existing network.We use a hub now,and would like to connect a switch to this hub.Is it possible.What all do I have to consider before doing this.

It's very possible I would move everyone from the hub to the switch to make it the primary and then chain the hub off the switch for the over flow connections. Audit the connections and make sure the servers and/or heavy users are on the switch. Keep the lite users on the hub. It's pretty much plug and play.

Slightly different from me - maybe I should start a new thread? I'm having problems with switches.I took out two 3COM Superstack II switches and installed three Netgear FS524S. Ever since, various printers and computers are running very slowly - but not all. Some computers wouldn't log on via ports on the middle switch in the stack (but some ports did!). I removed all connections to this switch and users could then log on (in fact 2 are still connected, and working, on this middle switch). It has seemed to cause print problems when printing via a print server across our NetWare 4.11 network, particularly on printers that don't have a network card, and print via an attached print server (a low spec PC Pentium I, 166mhz type of thing). Printing is extremely slow, if not non-existent. Rebooting each printer and print server appears to help, but only in the short term. Have you any advice. Is the higher speed FS424S coming across bottlenecks in our slow network around the print servers? We also have various hubs, with 3\4 users connected to 1 network port. Have I stacked the switches correctly? Netgear suggest there a 'table exchange' problem between Netgear and 3Com, and suggest checking the protocols I'm using, and reinstalling the communication (i.e. reinstall the IP stack). I have little experience as yet - any help would be extremely welcome. Dunc

I've come across a similar problem....I added a switch to our network and am having issues with latency on the entire network, including other subnets not physically directly attached to subnet that the switch was added to.
We had 2 16-port hubs daisy-chained together (nearly fully-utilized), with Hub A connected to a server router. I inserted a switch in place of Hub A, and plugged Hub A & Hub B into the switch, as well as pulling off other highly utilized cable runs from both hubs & plugging them directly into the switch. Would this new configuration cause latency on the entire network, including other subnets not directly attached to the switch & hubs?

This is a request also for someone to start up a switch forum because I've posted several questions on the 3Com switch forum and never got any response back. I just have some basic questions about using a switch configuring it on a home network etc. Please someone startup a forum I have a lot of questions!!!!!!!!!!!
