I have a P4 running under XP with an 80Gb hard disk. I recently tried to install a second H/D of 12Gb (formatted and working on another pc)on the same cable as a slave primary. On reboot I was presented with the message that windows did not start successfully and that a recent hardward change might have caused the problem. I was given a number of options ie. safe mode, safe mode with networking, restart with last good config and start normally. The only way I could get the pc up and running was to go into safe mode and restart from there.
I could then see the second H/D and transfer data to it. When I again reboot I get the same text screen.
When I disconnect the second H/D the pc starts up without a problem.
I have checked the bootup setup and it is set for auto detect of both H/D's.
Any help would be much appreciated.

If your have a p4 system and a 80gig HD is that running at ata100? does your ribbin cable have 80 wires but only 40 pins? If so a 12 gig HD might not run on that IDE port (ata100). Try slaving it w/ your CD-ROM or using a 40 wire cable.

Howdy:

Your 12gig will run on the ATA100 if that is what it is.. At least mine is and I can't see yours being any different.

Check the jumper setting on your main hdd and make sure it is set to master and NOT cable select.

Next, are you using normal flat IDE cable or one of the newer round cables??

Thanks for the suggestions. I have resolved the problem by connecting the 12Gb H/D to the CD ROM cable (as slave)and connecting the CD RW to the primary H/D cable (as slave). This seems to be working away happily - I'm not sure why.

Many thanks for the help.
