Adding a Second DNS Server in Domain 1

Hello I had a Windows 2003 Domain with 1 domain controller that is also a DNS server and DHCP Server.

I just bought a second server and use DCPROMO to make it a second domain controller for my domain. I would like this server to also be a DNS Server. I have installed DNS on the second server but I am not sure if I need to configure anything else or if when AD replication occurs everything will happen automatically. I want all of my clients to see 2 DNS servers when they do an IPCONFIG. Thanks

You should be set. Do you have the clients set up to use the local server as there dns servers? You can always set up both servers for them for fault tolerance. Good luck.

The clients get DNS configuration from the DHCP server. Yes they get the local DNS server as their server, I guess I need to ADD in the DHCP Server settings the second DNS Server so that the clients get that server as well.

So on the new DNS server I do not need to configure anything? All i did was install it

All you will need to do with the clients is add the seconadary DNS to your DHCP scope.

It's been a while but I think you do need to run the DNS set up wizard on the new DNS server and follow the wizard to set it up as a secondary DNS, I don't think it just 'works'

Adrian is correct, if you ran the wizard when you added DNS, you should be set. If you just went into the settings and checked dns, that won't do it. It isn't that hard though. You should be able to check your log files and see what's happening. Good luck.

I only checked dns in add/ remove programs thats all i did.. just installed DNS thats it.....After a few minutes i went to DNS Manager and I see that it has the same records and ip to name mappings that are on main domain controller....how is this possible if i have not configured anything?...it looks exactly the same as the main DNS server...I did not use a DNS wizard or anything like that

It could be that it is automatic as its and secondary domian controller, I thought it had to be configured as a secondary DNS, every days a school day!

Hey the less configuration that I have to do on my servers, the better for me! :)

Now I just have to figure out how to make this new server the MAIN DC because the original DC is going to go off line soon...I guess there is a way to transfer the Schema Master/Global Catalog/Licensing Server/FSMO Roles to the new server? Any easy way to do that?
