in the firewall menu on fed5 i added port 5900 under the tab other port now how do i open up that port? i ran nmap and it say the port is still closed!

Open it for what? Something needs to be listening on that port in order for it to be 'open'.

5900 is the port usually used by vncserver, so you would need to start the vncserver process to make it listen on that port.

Hi duster,
vncserver traffic is unencrypted.
rather block that port and tunnel vncserver through SSH.

so for example, to connect to another linux bpx (running vncserver) tunneling port 5900 through your ssh connection

Code:
ssh -L5900:your_remote_machine:5900

On the client machine you would then open vnc client and connect to localhost:x where x is your vncserver desktop session number
