If I wanted to provide a link for visitors to my site to download a PDF, do I just need to upload the PDF file to my webspace and then simply provide a link to that PDF on the webpage I want visitors to download from?

So that if the page I wanted to use was then the link to my PDF would be ?

TIA

Naiku

The link would be to where you have the file stored.
If you keep the file in a folder called pdfs then it would be so what your saying is right, upload it to your webspace and provide a link directly to it!

Remember that linking to the pdf, the pdf may open in browsers so do you want it to open or download??

If you want it to download you can ZIP the pdf file and link to the zip,
I think also if you change http:// to ftp:// it should download automatically even in pdf format. So it becomes ftp://
Another point, are you familiar with relative and absolute linking??

I want them to be able to open it in Internet Explorer/Acrobat Reader but also have the option of saving it to their PC if they wish. Which I think I am able to do if it opens up in Acrobat Reader.

Short answer to the question about relative and absolute linking, no I am not familiar with that.

Hi,

Ok, so just link directly to the file WITH the .pdf extension and it will open it. You probably should also include the message, to quote Spyderix,
"Netscape users press shift and click on the link to download, Internet Explorer users right-click and save target as"

Linking::

This is an absolute link:
This is a relative link:
downloads/anyfile.pdf

If your page is
and your pdf file is in the SAME directory
then in your download.htm file you should link to the document like:
relative link to pdf

There's no need to put the FULL ABSOLUTE link to the file, relative linking is more efficient and recommended.

If the files are in different directories its a little trickier but still not so difficult.

Hope I explained that ok, i'm crap at explaining things.

Hey

Thanks for the information about the pdf and about the absolute/relative links. Funny thing is I have used both absolute and relative links on my site, maybe I was just having a "blonde" moment (no offence to any blondes!) and forgot what they were.

I am having trouble.... i work for a newspaper that wants to put the paper on the website as a pdf. (since we have to make it that way for the printer anyway) we have a geocities advantage website, which does support pdf.

When i upload a pdf and make a link to the file and save that page... then go look click the link the acrobt reader will start to open and then my browser will show me a blank page.... the webpage reads...
HELP!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!

I am not computer wiz so please if you have an anser in simple terms it would be greatly apprieciated!

Does it say that on the web page, or is that the address of the web page that opens up?

Is that the address where you expect your pdf file to be located at?

Also, have you got Acrobat installed properly on your computer?

A tip for naiku - add a link to the download page for Acrobat on your page. It can be a bit difficult for users to track down the free Acrobat Reader software on Adobe's site because they are intenet on flogging the full version.

You can get a little advert/link graphic for this download from this page:

Hey Dunx

Thanks for the tip, I have already added a link direct to the download for the free reader having already been through the maze myself before while trying to find a copy of Acrobat Reader and not the full Acrobat product.
