Hello all, I am planning on adding second harddrives to my pcs at home, and i am wondering how i would do this..i heard partitioning a dive is not good. What do i need to add a second drive...

any help you can give will be appreciated...

I don't know who told you that partitioning a drive isn't good, but they're mistaken.

In order to use a HD, it MUST have at least one partition on it.

Anyway, what I would recommend doing is disconnecting your old HD, connect the new drive as master (refer to manual that came with it), use a Win 98 boot disk and format the new drive, then reconnect the old drive, set the new drive to slave and make sure the old drive is set to master.

You could also install it without ever connecting your old HD, but many people have lost all their personal files by doing that.

I recommend just following the steps above.

Adding a drive is pretty simple. However, take a look first and see who made your first drive. Maxtor and Western Digital don't like each other, so master/slaving them can be a chore. Also, while you are in there, make sure you have a data connector off of a ribbon to hook up the new drive.

Set the new drive as Slave. (per the jumpers)

Hopefully the drive you have now is set to CS (Cable Select) or Master anyway.

Hook up the ribbon to the new drive. And hook up the power plug to the new drive.

Most of the time, this is all you need to do. Most drives now come formatted and ready for use. You will be able to tell this when you go into Windows. Open your drive list and see if your new drive shows up as drive D:
