This is what I am hoping to accomplish.
comp 1-----|
comp 2---| |
router----firewall----cable modem
comp 3---| |
comp 4-----|
The firewall has two ethernet cards and will run in bridge or router mode. in bridge mode it asks for an IP address but does not assign addresses to the eth cards in router mode it asks for addresses for each eth card as well as subnet mask and default gateway.
I am new to firewall installation and am having a little problem wrapping my head around these concepts and the amount of material there is to read seems insurmountable.
I did actually have the modem linked with the firewall and seemingly communicating but all I got from my router was a link light on the status panel and no communication.
To further complicate matters the firewall comes with a nice windows gui configuration program but it is to this point unable to establish connection with the firewall. The comp I am using is connected to the router, which in turn is connected to the firewall through a crossover cable (required). What I did was to disconnect the cable between my modem and router, I connected the cable from my modem to the firewall (ETH0) and then connected the crossover cable to the firewall (ETH1) and then to the WAN connection on my router. My problem is what IP address do I assign to the two different adapters and what address do I assign to my router. Normally my router is set to obtain an IP automatically via DHCP.
The router has assigned 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.103 for comp 1-4 respectively, the router device ip is 192.168.1.1, my static IP assigned to me by my ISP is 24.72.xxx.xxx so what do I assign to ETH0 and ETH1 I can set my routers WAN connection type to static but what IP, subnet mask and default gateway do I assign it.
I am having a heck of a time figuring out who gets what address. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
