We have an HP MSA1000 with about 560 GB of space used on one of the arrays and want to add one of our unused 300 gb drives. Because this is in RAID 5 all the data will have to be moved/rearranged by the controller. My question is the process is usually a long one and curious if anyone has noticed a significant performance loss during this type of add/move?

Hi

There is an impact to performance but it depends what priority level is set for the rebuilding of the array. This job is definately a "out of hours" job as you would want to take a full backup of the data before you start. If you do have issues then it will take time to restore sevices.
So do it on a weekend and set your priority level to the highest and backup backup and backup.

All the best

Dave
